Baba Kamma 113a - Lying to non-Jews
The Quote
Jews may use lies to circumvent a “Goy” Gentile.
The Reality
This is a gross oversimplication of the statement. There is no statement that states that Jews can use lies to circumvent non-Jews in all situations. However, there *are* circumstances when this is permitted. Let’s take a look at the quote in question:
The text clearly says that we are talking about lying to someone who is a murderer (i.e. he’ll kill you if you don’t give him your property), a plundered or a customs collector (which, in the second part, is clarified as a customs-collector who is either self-appointed (and is no different than a robber) or one who is collecting more than the rightful amount (and is lining his own pockets with the extra that he’s collecting). In such cases, you’re allowed to lie in order to save your property from being stolen.
This law applies whether the person looking to take your property is Jewish or not. For example, one of the things you can say to save your property is that the produce is terumah — a portion of one’s yield that is only permitted for consumption by Kohanim (Jewish hereditary priests). A non-Jew who is looking to steal your property would not care about the laws of terumah – they don’t apply to him. So, it’s clear that (at least in that case) it’s talking about a Jew who is looking to take property unlawfully.
Summary:
There is no “carte blanche” to deceive non-Jews. However, in a case where someone is looking to extort money or property illegally from you, you may deceive him to save your property — and it doesn’t matter whether the extortionist is Jewish or not.
